Alton Sterling was shot and killed while being detained by police officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Philando Castile was shot and killed by a police officer during a traffic stop in Falcon Heights, Minnesota.
Brent Thompson, Patrick Zamarripa, Michael Krol, Lorne Ahrens, and Michael Smith were shot and killed by a sniper, Micah Xavier Johnson, in Dallas, Texas. Johnson stated, before himself being killed by police, that he wanted to kill police officers, particularly white police officers, as payback for the Sterling and Castile deaths, which are still under investigation.
The next day, Officer Michael Flamion was shot in the neck by Antonio Taylor during a traffic stop in Ballwin, Missouri. Flamion was in the process of returning to his vehicle after a conversation with Taylor.
Americans across demographics have cared about the events of this past week. There has been opinion, anger, sadness, conversation, and demonstration. It is evident that we think these individuals mattered.
But did they? Whatever you think about the justice of any of these events, did the individuals involved matter?
Many college students across the country have participated in demonstrations. Many are discussing these individuals on social media. They care. They are sure that they mattered. Yet many of these same students profess to believe in evolutionary theory. They profess to believe that there is no God, no Creator, that we have all simply developed over the ages from primordial pond scum.
Do you notice the issue with this? Pond scum does not matter. I can scrape it up, toss it out, and go eat a burger. No problem. Anything that is a derivative of pond scum is still basically pond scum. If humans developed as evolutionary theory postulates, then humans do not actually matter. Their lives have no value whatsoever.
By caring about the events that unfolded this past week, American college students, and Americans in general, have tipped their hands. Our convictions drive our emotions. Our beliefs birth our feelings. These people don’t actually believe evolutionary theory. They aren’t actually atheists. Evolutionary theory and atheism are just too obviously ludicrous, and everyone knows it (just like everyone knew the Emperor was naked; they just wouldn’t admit it).
No, people know that people matter, and they know this because they know that God is God, that he has created everyone, and that he has made man in his image. Man is valuable, and we know him to be so, because he has been created by God with special dignity, worth, and purpose.
This truth which all know is actively suppressed, because man is sinful and hates God.
When events like those of this past week occur, people fail to do as good a job at pretending. They know. May God grant those who this week denied him repentance and faith in his Son Jesus Christ, that they might enjoy redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
If you are a Christian, please do not miss the opportunity you have to proclaim the saving message of the gospel to those around you.
